Purpose
Cosmetic labels pack a lot of mandatory information onto very small surfaces. This guide covers building readable cosmetic labels in Label Studio Creator: INCI ingredient lists, batch code, PAO (period-after-opening) and other pictograms, net content, responsible-person details, and micro-typography that stays legible.

1. Mandatory blocks on a small label
Cosmetic labels typically must show, in a legible way:
- Product name / function.
- Nominal content (weight or volume, e.g.
50 ml e). - Full INCI ingredient list.
- PAO symbol or a durability date; batch/lot number.
- Responsible-person name and address; country of origin if required.
- Warnings / precautions of use; function of the product where not obvious.
2. INCI ingredient list

3. Pictograms (PAO and others)
Symbols communicate fast and save space. Common ones:
- PAO (open jar with
12M/6M) — period after opening. - Hourglass / date — use-by when durability < 30 months.
- Hand-on-book — refer to enclosed information.
- Recycling / Green Dot and hazard pictograms where applicable.
Place them as vector symbols so they stay crisp at small sizes and print sharply.
4. Batch code & date
Make batch variable
Bind ${batch} to data so each production lot is correct without manual edits.
Place it clearly
Batch and PAO/date must be findable — not hidden under a curve or behind artwork.
Match container printing
If batch is also inkjet-coded on the container, keep formats consistent.
Consider a DataMatrix
For traceability, add a small GS1 DataMatrix carrying GTIN + batch.
5. Micro-typography that stays legible
The hardest part of cosmetic labels is fitting legal text on a tiny curved surface. Techniques:
- Choose a font with a large x-height; avoid ultra-thin weights.
- Keep sufficient line spacing; dense INCI needs breathing room.
- Use high contrast (dark text on light, or reversed with enough weight).
- Reserve the flattest label zone for the smallest legal text.
6. Preflight & common pitfalls
