Purpose
Epson ColorWorks are on-demand inkjet label printers (pigment CMYK, roll-fed) for short-run color labels. This guide covers the ColorWorks workflow in Label Studio Creator: roll media and sensor setup, using the official driver, color and quality settings, the print queue, and getting clean, scannable output without wasting roll.
ColorWorks is CMYK inkjet on a roll — no white channel — ideal for vivid short runs on-site.
1. Capture roll & job parameters
ColorWorks is roll-based, so sensor and size accuracy drive everything:
- Roll width and label size (width × length); repeat pitch.
- Sensor mode: die-cut gap, black mark, or continuous.
- Media: matte, gloss, or synthetic inkjet label stock (use Epson-supported media for best results).
- Cutter behavior (auto-cut interval) if the model has a cutter.
- Quantity plus setup/calibration waste.
2. Build the roll template
New roll document
Set the real label size — never design ColorWorks jobs on A4.
Match the sensor
Template gap/black-mark/continuous must match the physical roll so labels index correctly.
Mind the margins
Leave the printer's edge margins; inkjet needs a small unprintable border.
Save per media
One template per roll width × label size × sensor mode for repeatable jobs.
3. Use the official driver

4. Color & quality
ColorWorks pigment inkjet is vivid but ink-hungry on heavy solids — balance quality against ink and speed:
- Pick a quality level suited to detail; highest quality for fine text/barcodes.
- Use a consistent ICC path (app- or driver-managed, not both).
- Keep small text/barcodes in K-only for crisp edges.
- Watch drying/handling on gloss before laminating or stacking.
5. Print one, then the queue
Test 3–10 labels
Confirm sensor indexing, color, and cut behavior.
Use the queue
Hold/release, retry, and reprint from history rather than rebuilding jobs.
Watch the start
Stay with the printer for the first labels to catch feed/registration issues.
Close out
Update media consumption and keep history for reprints.
6. Common problems and fixes
