Define named spot colors with CMYK/Lab fallback without bundling a licensed Pantone library: separations vs process output, and keeping brand color consistent across short runs.

Purpose

Spot colors let you name a brand color once and reproduce it consistently — without bundling a licensed Pantone library. This guide shows how to define named spot colors in Label Studio Creator, set their CMYK (and optional Lab) fallback, output them as separations or convert to process, and keep brand color stable across short runs.

The goal: a repeatable “Brand Blue” that behaves predictably in print and RIP, whatever the printer.

1. Why named spot colors

A spot color is a name plus a recipe. That indirection is what makes it powerful:

  • Change the recipe once and every object using the name updates.
  • Output as its own separation for spot inks or a RIP, or convert to CMYK for process printing.
  • Keep brand color identical across jobs and operators.
  • Avoid shipping a licensed Pantone book — define your own approved set.
Note: without an official library you won't display Pantone names, but you can define equivalents from your own measured/approved values.

2. Define a spot color

Create a named swatch

In the color/swatch panel, add a new color, mark it as spot, and give it a clear name (e.g. Brand Blue).

Set the CMYK fallback

Enter the process recipe used when the color is converted or printed on a CMYK device.

Add Lab if you measure it

If you have a measured Lab value, store it so a color-managed RIP can target it more accurately.

Reuse the swatch

Apply the named swatch to objects — never re-enter raw CMYK for the same brand color.

3. Fallback: how spot becomes process

4. Output & separations

Decide per job whether the spot travels as a plate or is flattened to CMYK:

  • Use separation preview to confirm which plates exist (C, M, Y, K, + each spot).
  • Export a RIP package when spot plates, white, or ICC metadata must be explicit.
  • Convert to CMYK for a plain process driver that has no spot concept.
  • Keep spot names consistent so downstream RIP mapping is unambiguous.

5. Keep brand color consistent

Approve once

Agree the CMYK (and Lab) recipe against a printed reference, then lock the swatch.

Share the swatch set

Distribute the named spot colors with your templates so everyone uses the same recipe.

Proof on real media

Color shifts with substrate and profile; proof brand colors on the actual stock.

Re-check after profile changes

New ICC profile or printer? Re-proof the brand colors before production.

6. Common problems and fixes
