Purpose
This beginner tutorial creates one clean label without skipping production checks. The goal is not a decorative mockup: it is a label that can be printed, scanned, saved and reused.
You will create a document, add a logo, text and barcode, check the layout, print one sample, then save the file as a reusable starting point.
1. Choose the label size and media
Start with the physical label you want to print. If you guess the size, the print will not align with the real stock.
- For sheet labels, choose the exact A4/A3/Letter stock or custom grid.
- For roll labels, choose width, label length, gap/black mark and printer profile.
- Use millimeters for accurate layout and production measurements.
- Set margins, bleed and safety guides before placing content.
2. Create the document
New document
Use File > New, choose the stock or enter a custom size. Confirm units, page size and orientation.
Show guides
Enable grid, rules and safe/bleed guides so objects stay inside the printable area.
Set printer intent
Select the expected printer/media profile early. It helps preflight catch route-specific issues.
Save immediately
Save the file before adding complex content so you can reuse it or recover it easily.
3. Add the basic objects

4. Run beginner preflight
Before printing, run the checks that catch most beginner errors. This is faster than wasting sheets or roll media.

5. Print one sample
Print one label or one sheet through the same route you plan to use for the batch: official printer driver, macOS/Linux CUPS backend, PDF export or RIP package.
- Use 100% scale for sheet labels.
- Use the correct roll media profile for roll printers.
- Check alignment, color, text, barcode scan and cut position.
- Write down the printer/profile/media used for the sample.
6. Print the small batch or release the queue
After the sample is accepted, print the small batch or create a production job ticket. For a first label, keep the batch small so you can still correct mistakes.

7. Save as a reusable template
After the first successful print, save a clean version as a template. Remove test-only text and keep the layout, guides, barcode settings and printer profile.
- Name the template by product type and size, for example
Jar_60mm_round_basic. - Keep placeholder fields for product name, batch and barcode value.
- Save media/profile notes in the job or template documentation.
- Use Template Library later when you create families of labels.
8. Common errors and fixes
